New Fanfare Commission

Published by lgcavbrass on

It has been 15 years since we installed the first ever (founding) Chancellor, Tanya Byron, to her position at Edge Hill University. The music for that ceremony was written/arranged by our colleague Lyndon Hills, an organist we have worked with since the earliest days of Cavendish Brass. Tanya Byron served in the role from 2008 to 2018 and this year we had the privilege of being asked to participate in the installation of the next Chancellor, Dawn Airey.

In order to mark the occasion a new fanfare has been commissioned, which we will play to mark the moment that Dawn accepts the role of Chancellor having been given her robes.

We are working in partnership with Cai Isfryn, a composer and arranger hailing from Anglesey, North Wales. His work ranges from tuba solos to string quartets and have been performed across the globe (from the Gala Concert for the European Brass Band Championships to Glastonbury Festival). He has a particular passion for contemporary music and bridging the gap between the traditional and the new. He recently curated and orchestrated the ‘Gig Y Pafiliwn’ for the Welsh Pops Orchestra and BBC Radio Wales which combined a traditional orchestral set up with welsh language hip hop artists. His work can be found on all streaming services under the artist name Idaten and a number of his works for brass band are published with Prima Vista Musikk.

The brief for the installation ceremony is for a new jubilant and uplifting fanfare, about 30 seconds long, to be played in addition to our other musical contributions on the day. We can’t wait to hear what Cai writes for us!
